Most all patients wish to avoid surgery, but need help in relieving their symptoms. A recent randomized clinical study compared spinal microdiscectomy surgery performed by neurosurgeons to non-operative manipulative treatments (chiropractic adjustment) performed by chiropractors. The study compared quality of life and disabilities of the patients.
Significant improvement in both treatment groups was observed. After 1 year, follow-up showed both groups did equally well. The patients with lower back pain and sciatica benefited from chiropractic adjustments to the same degree as if they underwent surgical intervention.
